Photonics West 2026 offered a clear snapshot of where the optics and photonics ecosystem is headed, and what it will take to move from technical promise to real-world impact. For the Luminate team, the week was packed, productive, and focused.

At our booth on the show floor, conversations ranged from early-stage technical challenges to manufacturing scale-up and market adoption, reinforced by demos and updates from several of our portfolio companies. Throughout the week, Luminate startup founders, mentors, and partners were highly visible across the conference program, contributing to technical talks, panels, and on-the-ground discussions.

Thank you to SPIE for convening such a broad cross-section of the global OPI community in one place. Photonics West remains a rare forum where researchers, manufacturers, entrepreneurs, and investors can engage deeply across technology sectors—often surfacing new opportunities for collaboration and continued discovery that don’t happen in more siloed settings.
Team takeaways
AR/VR/MR signals for the optics innovation ecosystem
One theme that surfaced repeatedly at Photonics West was the accelerating momentum behind AR, VR, and mixed reality. Luminate’s Director of Technology Integration, Dr. Damon Diehl, captured this shift in a recent article sharing his observations from the conference, including the growing gap between market demand and manufacturing readiness, the importance of standardization, and what “investable” really means as the sector matures. Read Damon’s takeaways.
Building ecosystems through execution and connection
Luminate’s Finance Analyst, Anjali Boriya, approached Photonics West from a finance and ecosystem-building lens and came away with a clear message: strong innovation ecosystems are built at the intersection of technical depth, intentional relationship-building, and hands-on execution. From conversations on the show floor to targeted networking events and community-driven gatherings, her takeaways underscore how meaningful engagement—not just ideas—drives long-term impact. Read Anjali’s takeaways.
Building momentum in laser science and manufacturing with STELLAR
Photonics West also provided a timely opportunity to bring STELLAR collaborators together in person. STELLAR (Science, Technology, and Engineering of Lasers and Laser Applications Research) is a National Science Foundation Regional Innovation Engine finalist focused on strengthening the laser ecosystem through workforce development, use-inspired R&D, entrepreneurship, and supply chain growth. As one of just 15 NSF Engines finalists nationwide—and the only New York-based finalist—STELLAR represents a significant opportunity to advance domestic laser innovation while reinforcing Rochester and the Finger Lakes region’s leadership in laser science and manufacturing.
As STELLAR advances through the NSF Engines process, we’re actively building partnerships with organizations interested in shaping this next phase of the laser innovation ecosystem. Learn more about STELLAR and how to get involved.
Why PICs power next-gen data centers and quantum-safe security
Data centers are running up against limits that are not just technical, but economic and security-driven. A recent EE Times article authored by members of the Luminate team examines why photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are becoming essential to the next generation of digital infrastructure. From energy-efficient, high-throughput data movement to hardware-level security and quantum-ready interconnects, the shift to integrated photonics is already underway.
Read the article to explore what’s driving this transition, and what it will take to scale it.
